NUTRITIONAL NUGGET - T is for Turmeric

Turmeric has been known for its medicinal and culinary uses for centuries. In its raw form, it looks very much like ginger root and its most active phytochemical is called curcumin. This gives turmeric a vibrant yellow colour, making it convenient to use in cooking when you want to add a touch of pizzazz!

It has an earthy flavour and goes particularly well in dishes like lentil dhal and vegetable curry. But go easy, too much can make your cooking creation have a bitter aftertaste.

Check out these 3 ways to enjoy turmeric:

  1. Rainbow rice. ๐Ÿš Add frozen mixed vegetables and a sprinkling of turmeric to the cooking water when you steam rice. (Use one part rice, one part vegetables and 1.5 parts water).
  2. Big up your baking. ๐Ÿฅช Turmeric can bring brightness to baked goods such as bread and wraps. Sprinkle it in when you sieve the flour.
  3. Creamy korma. ๐Ÿ› If youโ€™re cooking chicken or veg curry, add a touch of turmeric and freshly chopped coriander leaves to natural yogurt, and stir this in at the end of cooking to create an instant, vibrant creamy sauce.
